Small Business

Small businesses play a major role in most economies, particularly in developing countries. They employ the largest amount of people and make a bigger contribution to national income (GDP) than big business.

Create New Jobs

Small businesses also create most new jobs - according to the World Bank, 4 out of 5 new positions.

Missing chances

At least 200 million micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in emerging economies have no or insufficient access to credit, blocking their growth. The gap between the amount of credit currently extended and what these businesses need is estimated to be $2.2 trillion (McKinsey).

The Growing Market

A World Bank study suggests there are around 400 million MSMEs in emerging markets, of which more than 300 million are informal enterprises.

Emerging Opportunities

Formal Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) alone make up to 60% of total employment and up to 40% of national income (GDP) in emerging economies. These numbers are significantly higher when informal SMEs are included.
